Prof. Dr. Walter Gander

 

Walter Gander, born May 24, 1944, from Saanen (BE), Switzerland. Education: Diploma in mathematics ETH Zürich 1968. Then assistant of H. Rutishauser in his new institute of computer science. Ph.D. in mathematics 1973, supervisor P. Henrici. From 1973 to 1987: Professor for numerical analysis and computer science at the engineering college Neu-Technikum Buchs. 1977/78 Visiting Scientist at Stanford University. 1979 Habilitation and Privatdozent for numerical analysis at ETHZ. 1984 and 1993 sabbatical leave again at Stanford University. From 1987 to 1991 associate, since 1991 full professor for computer science at ETH Zürich. From 1989 to 1997 head of the Institute of Scientific Computing. 1990 - 1992: chairmen of the faculty of computer science. 1989 -1991 head of the Swiss Supercomputer Initiative for acquiring the national supercomputer in Manno. From Fall 1997 to Fall 2001 chairman of the department and director of studies of computer science.

Research interests: Scientific computing, i.e. studying the solution of problems with the use of mathematics and computation. Numerical Linear Algebra and Parallel Computing.

Prof. Dr. Jiří Hřebíček

 

Jiří Hřebíček, born Apr 23, 1947, from Brno, Czech Republic. Education: Diploma in mathematics Masaryk University Brno 1970. Then a scientist at Institute of Physics of Materials of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. From 1981 to 1990 head of Computer department there. 1989 Habilitation for numerical methods at Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Technology Brno. From 1991 to 1994: associate professor of Institute of Physics at Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry Brno. From Fall 1994 to Fall 2004 at Department of Information Technologies at Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University Brno. Since 1995 taught also at Faculty of Business and Economics, Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry Brno. 1996 Habilitation for Information Systems, Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry Brno, 1998 Professor for Information Systems there. Since Fall 2004 chairman for mathematical biology of Centre of Biostatistics and Analyses at Faculty of Sciences, Masaryk University Brno.

Research interests: Scientific computing, Mathematical modelling, Enviromatics and Bioinformatics, Environmental Legislation and Global Sustainability.
